Position Summary

Manufacture, repair and overhaul various types of systems and components associated with submarine and surface ships. Set-up and operate all types of machining tools, lathes, mills, grinder, saws. Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery. Strict adherence to safety, quality standards, good housekeeping habits, high level of critical thinking/reading comprehension, and overtime are required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to set up and manufacture components from stock or modify parts IAW drawing requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the following: speed and feed rates for machining various metals, characteristics of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and blue print reading.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge and practical skills tests required.

Qualifications

High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduate; and/or military and/or civilian experience with machining parts/components in a repair/manufacturing department or shipyard. Must have the ability to obtain government base access. Knowledge and practical skills tests required.

Level-I Qualifications: Requires constant supervision/oversight and has knowledge of the trade qualifications and performs as an entry level Inside Machinist. Must be able to understand and perform the basic set up and operation of various machines (lathes, mills, grinders, saws, etc.) and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use such precision measuring instruments such as outside diameter and inside diameter micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools and posses the ability to accurately record readings and measurements. Basic working knowledge of feed and speed rates. Ability to machine parts ensuring that the finish requirements of the drawing specifications are achieved.

Level-II Qualifications: Requires limited supervision/oversight and is familiar with the trade qualifications and can perform most tasks required as an Inside Machinist. Must have the ability manufacture components from stock or modify parts in accordance with basic drawing requirements. Must be able to understand and perform the set up and operation of various machines (lathes, mills, grinders, saws, etc.) and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use precision measuring instruments such as outside diameter and inside diameter micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools, and posses the ability to accurately record readings and measurements. Proficiency in reading basic blueprints, drawings, manuals, technical work documents, measuring and marking dimensions and reference points on material, selecting proper tooling, attachments and accessories as well as manufacturing fixtures to hold work pieces. Working knowledge of basic feed and speed rates and machining characteristics of various materials. Ability to machine basic parts to close tolerances ensuring that the finish requirements of the drawing specifications are achieved.

Level-III Qualifications: Requires limited to no supervision/oversight, has experience in the trade qualifications, and can perform all work required as an Inside Machinist. Must have the ability manufacture complex components from stock or modify parts in accordance with all drawing requirements. Must be able to perform the set up and operation of all machines (lathes, mills, grinders, saws, etc.) and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use all precision measuring instruments such as outside diameter and inside diameter micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools and posses the ability to accurately record readings and measurements. Advanced proficiency in reading complex blueprints, drawings, manuals, technical work documents, measuring and marking dimensions and reference points on material, selecting proper tooling, attachments and accessories as well as manufacturing fixtures to hold work pieces. Advanced working knowledge of all feed and speed rates and machining characteristics of various materials. Ability to machine complex parts to close tolerances ensuring that the finish requirements of the drawing specifications are achieved first time through.

Specialist Qualifications: Requires no supervision and is an expert in all tasks and qualifications required as an Inside Machinist. Will have the ability manufacture complex components from stock or modify parts in accordance with all drawing requirements. Must be able to perform the set up and operation of all machines (lathes, mills, grinders, saws, etc.) and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use all precision measuring instruments such as outside diameter and inside diameter micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools and posses the ability to accurately record readings and measurements. Expert proficiency in reading complex blueprints, drawings, manuals, technical work documents, measuring and marking dimensions and reference points on material, selecting proper tooling, attachments and accessories as well as manufacturing fixtures to hold work pieces. Expert working knowledge of all feed and speed rates and machining characteristics of various materials. Additional Specialized Qualifications/Experience:* *Off- site in place machining, NAVSEA Hatch Inspector, Electroplating, Water-Jet Operations, CNC Programming, Deep Submergence Systems (SOC MCD A, B, and C), SUBSAFE Qualification.
